Massimo Rattalino, 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo Sel. 26, Piemonte ($48 per bottle, 6-pack)
$289.20 / 6-bottle case
From 25 year old vineyards near the town of Diano d'Alba.
Vinified in stainless steel vats with the submerged cap system and maceration on the skins for ten to twelve days. Fermentation temperature is controlled and kept at around 25 to 27 °C. The malolactic fermentation occurs at the end of fermentation. The wine is then aged for 19 months; some of the must is aged for 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and for 7 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then left to rest for 2 years in the bottle.
This is a lovely Nebbiolo; dry and elegant. The colour is ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose, it has notes of violets, rose hips, herbs and sweet spices. The wine is dry in the mouth, with full body and a very long finish.
About the producer
The Massimo Rattalino winery is located on one of the most prestigious hills of the Barbaresco area.
With a focus on the Nebbiolo grape, careful management of the vineyards is essential to bring high quality grapes to the cellar. The classic Guyot vine training system is utilized and the harvest is manual. The care of the vineyard is precise, marked only by the variability of nature that makes every harvest unique.
Yields are controlled and harvest is manual to guarantee the quality of the grapes. This is the philosophy of Massimo Rattalino: excellent wines can only be obtained from an excellent raw material.
Work in the cellar gives continuity to what happens in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place mainly in steel, while aging in large Slavonian oak barrels is our choice to enhance the elegance of our wines. Only for the more structured Barbaresco and Barolo the large barrel is accompanied by a passage in tonneaux which, thanks to a slow oxygenation, gives soft and pleasant tannins. We like these wines as they will have the stuffing to improve over time, but are pleasant and approachable at a younger age.
