La Ferme des Sept Lunes, 2018 Chemin Faisant, St.Joseph
$451.20 / 6-bottle case
100% Syrah, a single vineyard cuvée made from the estate’s oldest vines, planted in the 1970s on deep granite soils. The three parcels represent one hectare in total and are located at 350 metres altitude. The vineyards are cultivated biodynamically and the grapes are harvested by hand. Vinification: de-stemming, maceration and fermentation in concrete vats, and one year of maturation, 20% in barrels and 80% in 600-litre demi-muid casks that have seen several wines. Neither fined nor filtered, and no added sulphites.
A nose of blackcurrant, blueberry, long pepper, and violet, with subtle notes of smoke and incense... The palate is clean and precise, structured and energetic, with alcohol and tannins perfectly in balance – plus a spicy, fresh finish to boot! Irresistible.
La Ferme des Sept Lunes is comprised of a patchwork of vineyards ranging in vine age and composition, all on a bedrock of granite. The terraced Saint Joseph vineyards below the converted barn-winery are majestic in their biodiversity. Wildflowers and grasses grow in and around the vines, and the occasional iris adds a vibrant pop of color. In Jean’s words, “a vineyard is a big garden” and he is clearly a devoted caretaker with a very green thumb.
